A young boy has died after being infected with the deadly virus, the first death in a pandemic-related coronavillosis in India.
The boy, a resident of the eastern state of Maharashtra, was treated at a hospital in Mumbai.
His death comes as India’s government announced that the country has seen the most cases of the coronaviral disease in more than 20 years.
The Indian National Institute of Health (INHI) said on Thursday that the boy’s death was confirmed on Tuesday night after a review of the medical records.
The news of the boy being infected was first reported by the Hindustan Times on Wednesday, a day after he arrived at the hospital.
The government announced on Thursday the death of the man in his 50s.
The child’s death comes just days after India saw a total of 4,096 new cases of coronaviruses and 6,084 deaths.
India has already reported nearly 1,300 new cases and nearly 4,000 deaths since November.
The state of Telangana is also home to about 1,000 cases of COVID-19.
In the last two weeks, more than 1,200 cases of both coronavids have been confirmed.
